Ron Smoorenburg's article about Tony Jaa
Posted by Sawatdee, 27/09/2006
Ron Smoorenburg, a Martial Arts artist who played in Tom Yum Goong "The Protector" as well as in the commercial for Thai Fruits, sent in an article he wrote for his site ronsmoorenburg.nl. It reveals how it is to work with Tony Jaa and some things he said. Ron worked with Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen as well and explains why working with Tony Jaa is definitely very different... Interesting to read!
(...) I never saw a man (Tony Jaa) working so hard. Everybody was tired at some point but Tony just kept going on, while he had many rehearsals and shots. Between the shots and rehearsals he was standing on his hands to keep warm and to practise. (I know Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen, but the endurence/power Tony Jaa has is just amazing)
In some shots (people dont know) Tony gets hit by kicks when he is watching the elephants skeleton. I kicked him at that moment. He asked me to kick him hard so I did. Besides he kicks his stuntman very hard, he himself want to get kicked hard as well. So the fight will look real for 100% because it is real.
After some moves to Tony Jaa it was time to finish me with a full twist in my face. Tony asked if I could stand a kick in my face. I said 'sure', yep Aroi. Tony had to laugh very hard because 'yep' means 'pain' in Thai and 'aroi' means delicious (but only for food) ..
The first take was a full blow in my face. They had to shoot another one for safety. And the second was full in my face again ! A good souvenir from working with Tony Jaa. Tony Kicks very very hard for his weight. After he hit someone he always ask if someone is ok. (Some other actors never do, just walk away : in this case I wont give you his name) Tony respects every stuntman and he doesnt behave arrogant. The example for many many actors !
Jackie Chan says he plugged Tony Jaa for a role in "Rush Hour 3,"' but the Thai action star ultimately didn't sign on for a part.
"I gave the director (Brett Ratner) videos of Tony Jaa because I think Tony Jaa is the most well-rounded of all action stars," Chan said late Tuesday on the sidelines of an event in Hong Kong to promote his new film "Rob-B-Hood."
"The director liked him a lot, but as far as I know, Tony Jaa is shooting a film in Thailand right now," he said.
Ong Bak 2, which I am developing from the very beginning to the very end. I will be directing myself. It will be a period piece but we can't tell you much. You will see me using a Muay Thai which you have never seen before, something totally new. In addition, you will see me with ancient Thai weapons for the first time on film. It will be extremely action-packed.

Anurak sent in the translation of this article that quotes Tony Jaa talking about Jackie Chan and Ong-Bak 2 :
"Tom Yum Goong climbed to #4 position in the box office in only 3 days!!
Tony Jaa is delighted about the success, and at the same time he has turned down hollywood in order to concentrate on directing Ong Bak 2. Tony Jaa has said:
"The success is something that happened unexpectedly. I never expected popularity or money. If this is the highest point for me, even if I don't have success in Hollywood I'll still be very satisfied. I would like to say that Muay Thai is a science that is intertwined with the kingdom of Thailand, due to the emphasis of usage of knees and elbows instead of the use of hands and feet like used by Jackie Chan, who is my hero.
"It's unfortunate that I have to turn down "Rush hour 3" and the opportunity to work with Jackie Chan because of my obligation to 'Ong-Bak 2' which I'll direct and star in. It is work that is much heavier than what i've done before because I'll have greater responsibilities. It's really unfortunate that I'll miss this chance. But if the opportunity ever arises again for me to collaborate with a person I admire so much, I probably won't miss it.
"But today, I'd like to concentrate on the success that I'm trying to make on this project that I've been thinking about constantly for the past year - Ong-Bak 2. I want to devote myself to this and make this the best that I can" says the famous actor."

Posted by Sawatdee, 11/09/2006
The Protector reached the top 5 of the US box office and earned nearly $5 million in its first weekend ! Fourth spot goes to The Protector who opened in 1,541 theatres for a per-theatre average of $3,244. The opening is about as much as Jaa's first North American release, Ong-Bak, earned in its entire North American run. The U.S. release, by the Weinstein Co.'s Asian-focused Dragon Dynasty label, runs a mere 82 minutes -- 28 minutes shorter than Thailand's 110-minute version.

Capone : What is next for you. I’ve been reading two things: One is that you’re preparing for ONG-BAK II, and then there’s another film called SWORD?
Tony Jaa : SWORD is on the back burner for the time being. We will be doing it later.
In the next film, ONG-BAK II, this really comes from my heart and from my spirit. I have already many scenes, action scenes in my head. I’ve already filled up my head. I will be directing the film as well. It will be a period piece. You will see a lot of Muay Thai that you have never seen before. It will be a very interesting new Muay Thai movie, but there will also be ancient Thai weaponry used. There will be elephants involved in the movie as well, and they will be part of the action.
Capone : Will you be playing the same character, or will it be a completely different story?
Tony Jaa : I will be a different character and a different story.
