*ahem* This will be my first topic and I just want to ask a really simple question:

How many Thai movies have you all seen? Or was Ong-Bak your first?

I can't really put a number on my count since I have seen Thai movies ever since I was little... I CAN tell the most recent ones you can relate to.

Ong-bak
Suriothai
Story of X-circle (X-man)
Headless Hero 2

Well those are the ones with englis names, others I saw didn't have an English title so I forgot the name shortly after watching it 22_weep.gif

Ong-Bak was my first thai movie. Then I saw 999999 and Bang Rajan.
I loved Bang Rajan, beautiful and very realistic movie.

I also have beautiful boxer but don't have time to see it yet
Okies
hahaha

Just like I told Pii Ongkot, I also have Beautiful Boxer, original I bought in Thailand, but it's not subed so I haven't gotten to watch it. Altho I can understand some Thai, I can't understand enough to make out the story.

How about Born to Fight? Has anyone seen it? I've already ordered it and waiting for its arrival. If anyone has seen it, I'd like to know how it is compared to Ong Bak. I heard there were some crazy stunts but it's not really getting the same kind of rep. as Ong Bak. But then again, it took awhile for Ong Bak to spread. Just wanted to know if it is as enjoyable as Ong Bak. 01_smile.gif

Talke a look here http://forum.tonyjaa.org/index.php?showtopic=141 and here http://forum.tonyjaa.org/index.php?showtopic=40.
Concerning me, I saw Born to Fight and find it too violent for me
Goddessy
Thank you! 02_biggrin.gif I like over-the-top violence...ehehe  I tend to start beating up on my nephew everytime I watch Ong Bak. Too bad he's picked up a couple moves and I took some to the head. Let me tell ya, that kid is bony...

My cousin too begun to make some moves he saw in Ong-Bak 30_icon_evi.gif. Hopefully he don't train on his little brother  !

Where do you get these movies to watch here in the states?

ethaicd.com is the best source for thai movies and cd's. if you don't have a region-free dvd player of some sort, you should buy the VCDs. they are playable on 99% of all DVD players.
Bliss
I only have an xbox so I can't play VCD'S. 0067.gif
I guess I can burn them on to dvds... I mean that's not a bad thing right??? 23_whistling.gif Because I did buy it already.

you should be able to play VCDs on your computer. i know you have a computer! 04_wink.gif
Bliss
I didn't know you could play it on the computer. Thank you for this information, Thawan Daeng.

i don't think you can just put VCD data onto a DVD disc and play it as a DVD... they are in completely different formats. it's like giving a chinese newspaper to an italian who doesn't read chinese and saying "well, you both have noodle dishes in your country... you should be able to read the newspaper."

...ok i guess that wasn't a very good analogy. ok here's the thing: VCDs aren't necessarily anything specific, as far as i know. sometimes they can be in .avi format, sometimes in .dat format, sometimes the disc includes an automatic player, sometimes you have to open a specific file to watch it...

whereas DVDs (movie DVDs at any rate) are designed specifically to plop into a DVD player and have their data (which has been codified by the DVD consortium) easily read by DVD players. DVD data discs just contain whatever information you put on them.

i'm not a technologically savvy person. i don't know how good accurate my information is, and i don't know if anything i said makes any sense! maybe someone who does know about these things can help you out more.
anurak
by the way, what movie did you get...?

whatever it is, hope you enjoy it! 02_biggrin.gif

I have not gotten a movie yet but I hope to get Ong Bak and the Making of Ong Bak. I have also heard great things about Born to fight on this forum so I should give that a watch to.

Thank you, I ordered the Ong Bak vcd from there, so I will see how it plays when I get it. Not sure how long it will take to get here, but I am not very good at being very patient. heh! I should look to see if they have a Making od Ong Bak vcd on there. 01_smile.gif

I also love Fan Chan: My Girl..it's a great movie 06_rolleyes.gif You can also find great thai movies at http://www.thailandcd.com.
Oh, also a warning to anyone who wants to watch the horror film The Shutter on their computers. The VCD is equipped with a virus that attempts to block people from copying the VCD. Unfortunately, the virus works a little too well and gets to your computer just by watching the movie. 22_weep.gif

I want one of those DVD players that can watch regional DVDs....

When I watched the Shutter. I don't think I'm gonna be getting a polaroid camera again. It was damn scary, For me it is by far the scariest flick I’ve everseen in my entire life. One of the best horror flick.I was so freaked out I had my bag covering my face for at least half of the movie. I screamed a couple of times in the theatre. lucky I'm not only one who did it.

From my understanding, you can play any DVD worldwide-- whether in PAL or NTSC format, and any region code-- on a computer. I use a Mac, but I believe this applies to PCs as well.

I bought Ong Bak both in the NTSC and the PAL version. But is able to play only the NTSC on my player and the PAL on my computer.

If you enjoy watching international movies from all over, you may want to invest in a code-free DVD player. One good one for USD $150 is here:
http://www.codefreedvd.com/

You can also convert your DVD player to an all-region player by purchasing certain hardwares, installing, and then reprogramming the player. I wouldn't recommend this unless you're good at this sort of things.

Another tip is to find the cheapest DVD players (around $30-40). They're usually code-free. Of course, make sure you research this out before you purchase it.

If you have purchased an original DVD that is a region other than the one your DVD player can play... and you're somewhat tech saavy, you can easily decode and convert the DVD to an all region DVD (region 0) using converting softwares, which you can then play on your player. This is also a great way to backup your originals or if you want to lend a copy to a friend and don't want it damage when you get it back).

For me, I can easily get any movie worldwide by simply researching it using Google then purchasing it online. You can also find most movies on Ebay, but beware, many of them aren't originals, and again, make sure you have the means to play it.

Hope this helps and enjoy.

one warning about region-coded dvd's on a computer: unless you have a region-free program installed on your computer, usually the software will allow you to switch between regions for a limited number of times, and then when it reaches its switching limit, it will automatically lock to the last region. this may not apply to all computers, so just know what you have, be familiar with your software and your dvd's, and consider getting region-free software for your computer's dvd player just in case. better safe than sorry.

Thanks Thawan. That last bit of info is indeed important.
I'm glad you remember. 02_biggrin.gif

I'm a fan of Pen-ek Ratanaruang and always watch his work in theater ( except his first movie which I don't like much) . He's the man who directed 'Monrak Transister'. But I don't understand why after 'Last Life in the Universe' ( Among his movies, I like Last Life in the Universe and Sixtynine the most), there are no more of his directed movies coming out. I think Pen-Ek also did some part in the 'Citizen Dog' coming out last year( other than giving his voice as the narrator) because the movie picture look cool. However, I still think the Citizen Dog is not his style. I really love Pen-ek's style but his movie always drawed little money in Thailand though winning the critics' praise outsidet the country. It's been 2 years without his movie in our theater now. Well..tell Pen-Ek, I love him and please produce more work.33_icon_rol.gif
