I had been very privileged to see the Thai version of ONG BAK almost 2 years earlier to the release of the US version of this coming Friday. When I seen the DVD Thai version ONG BAK with English sub-tittles, I was blown away
Interestingly enough last week I had gotten the cold and missed one day of school and my friend who works in this movie theater gets an exclusive screening for two to see ONG Bak. To his dismay he was busy and he gave me the pass because he knew that I was crazy over this film for almost 2 years now and knew I would love to see it. So I went with my brother to the screener and sat down for what I thought would be a dubbed version and some how (I don know how you could improve something better than the Thai version) an improved version of ONG BAK by Luc Bronson and my heart had broken
But here’s a list of the things changed.
-Sub-titles changed
-Ting's character background story that explains that he was an orphan is cut.
-The medicine that relieves pain and strengthens whoever use is given by the monk at the beginning is not told to be medicine but something that once belonged to a great master of Muya Thai. (Doesn't make complete sense of something that belonged to great master of Muay Thai, is chewed and spat out by Ting onto his arms.)
-More to the liking of most westerners you'll be glad because the music from the Thai version is replaced by trendy hip hop music for most of the scenes except the very last fight scene (I despise the changes.)
-Dirty Balls name is Hum Lae
-lot of times when Muay supposed to talk is cut.
-Muay (dirty balls partner in crime.) having an older sister that is addicted to drugs and is Bak Duon girl is cut.
***********Spoiler*********
-Muay sister is shown dying but makes no connection to any Characters. (I guess its to makes Bak Duon seem more like ruthless drug king killing one of his own drug sellers for trying to go cold turkey.)
**********Spoiler***********
-Muay in the hospital with her dying sister is cut.
-Muay just becomes sad for some odd reason, before she and Dirty Balls are kidnapped.
-Several weird sound overs (e.g. when the crippled guys main henchman is crushing Ting with foot you can hear "take!...that!" twice.)
-Credits music is straight from the French soundtrack of ONG BAK.
