Full Version: The Protector on US Box Office
TonyJaa.org Forum > Tony Jaa on screen > Tom Yum Goong

Here I have an anticipation from a boxofficeguru who tells that The Protector is probably about to make US$ 6M this weekend (Sep 8-10, 2006). 25_dribble.gif If it's true, it will be more than Ong-Bak's total 4.5M last year.

We may have to wait for the answer in a couple of days to come. 0146.gif

The review on rotten tomatoes isn't that good. Although I think most of them is actually positive comment. Because they all said the same thing, "Great action, stupid story." Thus it screws the negative/positive system they got.
ongkot
ok, I cheked it from Yahoo. In my area, there are a couple theaters showing TYG, which are more than I expected. And I think that's more than there were when ongbak was showing. I'll go see the movie today. So everybody, please go check them out and come back and tell us how it is going on at the theater. 32_icon_mrg.gif

anurak
and be ready for a flood of new people coming to the forum !

It's playing at 7 major theatres in my city. I was very pleasantly surprised to see such large distribution. Ong Bak, played only in 1 theatre when it premiered here.

A major step up. 02_biggrin.gif

Let's hope that the action alone (as it's the only thing it has that has received positive reviews...) will be enough to draw in new fans and large numbers of viewers.
ongkot
ok. i am back from the movie.

I got a ticket for 7:10 pm. First, i was the first one to get in the theater. I thought, ohh man, this is bad. Nobody is here. But later when the movie was about to show, there were about 50 people. That's not bad at all comparing to when they show Ongbak (about 10 people at that time). I think at 9:00 pm they will have more people coz people just finish eating dinner and go for some entertainment.(prime time)

It's been a longgg time for me since i watched tyg the last time. So, I can feel about the same of how people who never watch it. The movie is great. The action was damn tight. I dont understand why people on the internet said that the sotry s@cks. (now i am whispering) At the end I shed my tears. The movie moved my heart. But maby, i dunno, maybe I am Thai. I totally understand how Kham feel. It was a really heart breaking moment. And the funny thing was, the small elephant has name Khorn. Haha it sounds like 'corn' in English. That's cute for an baby elephant name.

What annoyed me was the translation on the subtitle was wayyyyy off. Seriousely, it's wayyyy off. And many stuff has been cut like mentioned in another thread. (that thread was great in detail).

People enjoyed the movie. I had a chance to 'interview' some of them. LOL. I asked one lady and two guy (they didnt come together) how they know about this movie. They said that they saw a preview of this movie last night. And two guys said that they saw Ongbak before. So here they are. I didn't know that they show 'the protector' preview on TV because I have not watch TV for a long time.

About my feeling for this movie, this movie is tight, and friken sick, sick, reallyyyyy sick (in a good way). This is real stuff. Ohhh man, that's all I can say. (and i watched it before)

So there you go, my report from a theater near my home. 32_icon_mrg.gif
anurak
thanks for the report Ongkot!

there have been a lot of commercials on TV for 'the protector.' all of my friends here know about it, but i'm not sure if they know about it just because i talk about it so much or because they see it and are interested on their own.

i hope i have time to go see it in theaters... i want to know how general audience here will react to the movie.

TOM YUM GOONG...ahem, THE PROTECTOR did an estimated $1.8 million dollars yesterday.

The Weinstein Company (those brothers who brought you Miramax) is still looking for a hit as their pickup The Protector earned $1.8 million from 1,451 theaters for what will be only a $5.5 million weekend.

I take back what I posted earlier. The Weinstein release was simply awful. The technique they use with the film (making the picture grainy) hurts my eyes. The dialogues makes no sense. The way the actions were paced were excruciating due to fast forward edit.

Congrat Quentin Tarantino and Dragon Dynasy. Thumbs even with the awesome action scenes.

Tony Jaa's the Protector debuted 4th place with 5 million. Last year his movie debuted with 1.3 million. "This was a really bad weekend for U.S. movies. The most a movie made was the Covenant with 9 million.
Thep
Thanks, Carrie. 0117.gif
At least this would be a very good news for Thai audience. In Thailand, there are many who have a great expectation for Tony to be more well-known in the US. 26_wub.gif
bearythebear
Well, the Protector brought in roughly $5 mil this weekend, at least thats the numbers I've found, which is way beyond the estimated numbers that the production company predicted :)

The movie was kick ass with its action, even though what they did to the movie for the US release is questionable, it doesn't take away from the entertainment factor of the movie :)

Bowing in fourth place was Thai action star Tony Jaa's The Protector with an estimated $5M from 1,541 sites. Averaging a lukewarm $3,265, the R-rated pic from The Weinstein Co. generated an opening weekend average similar to the $3,449 figure that Jaa's Ong Bak posted last year when it opened to $1.3M from only 387 theaters.

#4 on the opening weekend (Sep 8-10, 2006)
US$5M and counting...
These are going to be the highest record for the history of Thai film on US Box Office. happy crying.gif

And now this news is very hot on Thai entertainmet webboards, especially on pantip.com webboard. However, that website used to be the place where those who hate TYG came to leave a lot of bad or sarcastic comments with the main reason that this film would not be as successful in foreign countries as Ong-Bak. I don't want to argue that they are right or wrong to have those comments. But today, you may know, those critics keep themselves in silence, 0295.gif leaving the webboard with the voices of cheering and congratulations. cheers.gif
ongkot
Thanks, Thep
LOL
yes, indeed.
#4 that's the highest in history.

Haha in pantip? lol i saw many jerks trying to critic movies all the time. I left that place years ago. lol

I Really loved THE PROTECTOR. I saw it 15 times all weekend long since the opening.
By the way, I also saw the thai version of THE PROTECTOR A.K.A TOM YUM GOONG and they had more action scenes in it and the US verison they cut out some very good scenes in the movie. I Still loved it no matter what.

Wow. 0117.gif Confessions of a real fan. 0483.gif

Me too Sammi. 1e.gif The Thai TYG DVD has been in my DVD player for several months. For it is so convenient for me to watch it every time I turn on the player. 19_tongue.gif

If I could go to America, I would surely go to see The Protector version of TYG, at least to see its new arrangement. But not to waste my money with the flight charge from Thailand to USA, 18_drool.gif I'd better wait for the DVD. sweatingbullets.gif

Yeah, the first time I went there I browse it for about an hour, and then left and and never return since. 02_biggrin.gif Too many haters for my taste.

I saw it on Saturday. I had seen Tom Yum Goong before, but only on a 20" TV Screen, seeing the new film on a Cinema screen was a really great experience. I loved the fact that they didn't dub Tony at all during the movie (I hate it when they dub over movies) and I liked the new music, it gave the movie a much more serious and vengeful tone I think.

Thank you guys for your news and comments flowers.gif
And Ongkot thank you for your report 32_icon_mrg.gif
Whooaaa, you even interviewed some people?
For us? 0146.gif 19_tongue.gif
Thank you, my friend wink2.gif

When I saw TYG, there were about 100 people there,
which surprised me very very much,
because I didn´t see much commercial for that film.
Just a few small posters inside(!) of the theater and trailer.
I don´t know any numbers from Germany,
but I´m glad that TYG is so successful in US 06_rolleyes.gif

Sad news, THE PROTECTOR dropped out of the top ten this weekend. It made $2.4 million and came in 11th place.

anurak
i was afraid this would happen. i stopped seeing tv ads for it after the opening weekend. anyway, it's still very impressive rankings. maybe the ratings would have been higher for the second weekend if weinstein company hadn't changed it so much.
udar55
Well, regardless of how it is performing now, it does hold the record for the highest a Thai film has ever gotten in the US box office. That should be worth something. 01_smile.gif
anurak
yes, and i hope that it's a continuing trend (rise in box office rating). hoprefully ong bak 2 will get even higher!
udar55
As of this weekend, THE PROTECTOR passed the $10 million mark.

Ooops. I'm italian. Our equivalent is indeed "Thailandese", from "Thailandia".

What's wrong? 0146.gif
anurak
haha ok i understand...

proper way is just like in your member-name; you would just say "thai" not "thailandese"
ongkot
Yeah, just like anurak said.

Guess what, I have heard some of my friends say "thailander". 0483.gif

I love the word "THAI". I think it sounds so... "universal".
Thep
Finally, after The Protector has been released for 9 weeks (63 days) in USA, the total gross on the Box Office is $12,044,087. 25_dribble.gif

I guess that The Protector is now no more in the US theaters, because I have seen no movement of it in the Box Office since November 10th. But the DVD is going to be released, and its total $12M is really good for Thai movie so far. 0483.gif
