If you want to check out a complete listing of Ong Bak reviews, click the link above. Out of 50 reviews, only nine were bad, and those can be summed up from reviewers who were expecting to see high art or something. The only current movie on the front page that scored higher is Million Dollar Baby, which everyone says will sweep the Oscars.

The only shame is that so far, the American version has only been released in just 6 or 7 major cities....just over 300 theatres,22_weep.gif while the latest Winnie the Pooh movie gets several thousand openings. I've had the overseas DVD for nearly a year and have shown it to a few friends who were blown away and said they would pay money to see it on the big screen...but nobody wants to drive six to 12 hours to see a film...even one as good as this one.

Thanks for the link.
Too bad Ong-Bak was not released in every US city because it would be a great great great success for sure. A lot of reviews are good and I think it's kinda rare... All the theaters broadcasting Ong-Bak right now are sold out !
I can't imagine the success of Tom Yum Goong worldwide 02_biggrin.gif

I just checked boxofficemojo.com and get this, after opening on just 387 theatres, Onk Bak pulled in $1,300,000!!! That's an average of $3,359 per movie house! It ranked #17, but it's per theatre take would put in at # 8!!!

Here's the Onk Bak page:

Just think what this would do in wide release...2,000 to 3,000 screens!

Someone who wrote this review is probably a martial arts action movie hater and some opera guy. Its kinda hurting to read this arguable review.

Wow, thats actually very good for very limited release in the U.S and keep in mind without much advertising....Since its his first movie released in the US, they were probably worried of its success and wanted to try major cities first and see if its a hit before they make it a mass-market thing namean...

As far as the review from Danny's link, thats painful but you are going to expect some bad feedback from reviewers....I mean come on not everybody can like the same thing....and it isn't so bad after you think about it because the review was mainly attacking the plot and storyline which isn't unusual for an action movie to lack because ACTION movies are based on ACTION people...I've heard Ong Bak being criticized badly because of its vague and confusing storyline...but the action itself is non-comparable(I'm not sure thats a word)....It almost sounded discriminating or racial when he said that Jaa was turning to be the next Bruce Lee and then said we don't need another of those....doesn't it?.....Jaa clearly stated himself he did not want to be the next Lee or Chan or even replace them but he wanted to display the art of Muay Thai at its best and give the audience something to drool over.....Besides in America you get the oscar for storyline not action and that is why it is understandable that American critics may attack this movie in a negative way....I'm actually SURPRISED that there weren't alot more reviews just like that.....but in the end its the audience or you, as an individual who has the last say in things...you make your own decisions and don't let others make them for you.....and from what I've heard...Ong Bak has been a hit so far....

And I'm also surprised Ebert gave 3 stars also because he is a true and strict critic..one of the most widely known in America....he enjoy movies mainly on their storyline...and I'm guessing Jaa's out-of-this-world, truly no-strings attached stunts overshadowed that............

I'm out.....

I couldnt believe it was that limited a release. In Ontario, and probably in a lot of Canada, it is playing everywhere. During the week before it was released there were sooo many commercials for this movie where I live. And not just 1 channel, around 5 or 6.

And I can't stand critics who review movies not based on what they are. Everyone knows most Martial arts films have a cheesy story and bad acting. People who go are just going to watch the fights. And I cant believe some of them find the fighting brutal and sickening. There was almost no blood in it at all.

It showed in many theaters in Dallas. I thought this might be because one of the distributors is 2929 Productions which is Mark Cuban's company (he owns Dallas Mavericks NBA basketball team)

I did not think the storyline was confusing. It is the classic martial arts style...either the protagonist has to avenge the death of his master, or something or someone gets stolen/kidnapped from the village and the hero has to save them. In Ong Bak it is of course the latter.

I liked it because it was a respectful tribute to the classical martial arts films but at the same time it showed us new things we have never seen before in such a movie. In the theater I went to everyone was oohing and ah-ing and cheering throughout the film and even some of the employees were coming in to sneak a peek during the fight scenes.

The problem is, they only released the movie in a few urban areas and totally left out the rest of the country! Not everybody lives in these few areas like LA, New York, Atlanta and Dallas. Country folks want to see it too and given from the ads on the site, they are marketing it to just one segment of the population. They could make a lot more money with a wide release!!!

I know what you mean about all critics..
but ebert actually gives more movies a chance on what its trying to do...

hear the reveiw from his show and why the other guy gave it a thumbs down....

I was really mad that they didnt show it in Ohio 22_weep.gif

Wow, those critics... They sound so stubborn compared to many of the good reviews. Some people just can't stand something new or foreign and just find ways to pick at it. But some people don't like martial arts so u can't expect them to appreciate a movie like Ong Bak. At least we can conclude that most of the world is enjoying this movie. 02_biggrin.gif

Eberts states, that he is able to appreicate the film for what it is , which is why he gave it thumbs up. the other guy is the one who couldnt appreciate it..
