sawatdee krub took khon!

just want to introduce myself nit noy na krub! i'm a 27 year old Thai guy born and raised in New York. i speak thai ok, but i can't read or write it. i try to go to thailand to visit my extended family every year. i saw the trailers for ong bak when i was visiting thailand years ago, but unfortunately had to return home about a week before it came out in theaters! i was hooked as soon as i had seen the trailer! my uncle was kind enough to send me the VCD as soon as it came out, and then i bought the DVD soon after. i am very happy that jaa panom is bringing so much attention to thailand and all thai people everywhere are proud of his accomplishments! :Thailand:

Welcome :)
Just a question : what does means "Na Krub" ?

Sawatdee krub, Sawatdee! 04_wink.gif

"Krub" is many things, but in the usage that you asked about it is just something to add to the end of a sentence to make it more polite. when you use "na" at the end of a sentence, it is kind of like saying "ok?"

for example, what i said was "just want to introduce myself nit noy na krub"
so that would be "just want to introduce myself a little, ok <polite>?"

only boys say krub. girls would say "ka" and use it the exact same way. hope this helps krub!

by the way, i really like your website. it is a great resource for information! keep up the good work na krub! 02_biggrin.gif

So if I went around saying Krub, would they think I was a manly girl? Or just a weirdo?
anurak
i think thai people would just think it was cute that you say it wrong  . we would appreciate that you are trying to speak thai, and it wouldn't matter too much if you say it right or wrong! probably wouldn't correct you either, don't want to make you sad.

Anurak, l am sorry to post on such an old thread! l dont know how far back we can go with replies? lts been quite quiet so l have been looking back over old threads. You must be getting near to 50 now!!!! wink2.gif
l have always been curious as to the sound l keep hearing at the end of the sentences in Tony's films. To the European ear, or mine anyway, it sounds like 'hap', is this the word 'krub'? 28_suspect_.gif

yes.

colloquially, the R is often dropped so the word becomes more like "kub". also, in colloquial dialect the K sound becomes more like a KH.

thai language is a living language, and it's always changing. consider that the word ครับ "krub" came originally from the word ขอรับ "kho-rub". over the years, i guess thai people were in too much of a hurry and compressed the two syllable word into one syllable. these days, it seems that thai people are in too much of a rush and are now dropping the letter R from krub.

Thank you Anurak, for the reply, its fascinating to learn new things. flowers.gif
Languages are changing all the time. We speak a completely different language to Skakespeare and Jane Austen. I dont know if its laziness or like you say, we dont have the time to speak properly anymore so its all shortcuts.

lol Oxfordshire is under water and i'm learning Thai 16_shock.gif

This website is so great that I am lost,I dont know where to begin...but I am delighted.
My parents are from Okinawa-Japan,but I dont learned to apeak the language.
I think a pity that tha descendants here of the eastern world, forgotten the roots,a tradition...
I think I would like Tony Jaa divulge (divulgasse) their Thai culture, and not (ocidentalizasse)...
sorry my mistakes.
