so what are some of your favorite parts of Ong Bak? what is your favorite scene? favorite fight? favorite move? etc...
i made this topic really because i want to talk about the fight in the bar with big bear. that's my favorite scene in the movie. the build-up to the fight, tony's first move against big bear, and the short-but-sweet fight against big bear.
ok let me break this scene down... first, we have big bear... a huge guy who easily finished his last opponent. and he's disrespecting thailand and thai people. and he's doing it in thailand's capitol city! so ting's got his internal conflict that he's not allowed to fight... and suddenly, one scrawny little thai guy comes up and challenges big bear!!! that skinny little guy get so much props!! whoever wrote him into the script deserves major credit! obviously the guy's got no chance against big bear, but he can't let his country or his people be bad-mouthed like that! skinny guy gets a serious beat-down, big bear slaps the waitress, and ting comes to the rescue. big bear curses out thai boxing one last time and ting delivers the most perfect move in that situation: bata loop pak. as i'm sure most of you all know, feet (especially the bottoms of feet) is very taboo in thailand. and heads are quite sacred. they're the two opposite ends of the spectrum. feet walk on dirt, head is closest to the heavens. offering someone the bottom of your foot in thailand is worse then giving someone the finger.
much worse. so with beautiful grace, ting delivers the bata loop pak to big bear and makes a HUGE statement: don't talk sh!t about thailand!!!
ah, catharsis. that one move was possibly the single most cathartic moment of any movie i have ever seen. love it!
ok... so now that everyone think's i'm totally weird... anyone else care to share?

Thank Buddha there's another weird person!

Ahahha...
The Big Bear fight was one of my favorite scenes also! But if I had to choose a different scene, it would have to be...the scenes towards the end of the movie, ya know, when he was in the cave. Not exactly the krabi krabong scene but the scene after that where he had to fight against those men in black clothing.
I loved his spin-kicks! Especially the one where he made a full backwards spin and kicked his opponent with both his feet! Not the most difficult move but no one ever came up with that before!

The final fight with Saming (tiger). They all use MT against each other. It's so brutal and a lot of blood. And also a lot of cool moves.
But actually cool moves are every where in the movie.

The flaming knee/fire kick scene is my #1 favorite. It looks like it was from a video game. My second favorite scene is when Jaa uses his acrobatics with some fancy spin kicks against groups of enemies in the cave scene. That part was after the krabi krabong scene. And 3rd favorite, the market chase scene. Aww heck everything is great.

Big Bear scene.
The drama built up for it. The taunting from Big Bear, The weak Thai guy who holds up the finger and screams "f@ck you!" in his Thai accent, the innocent female who gets slapped by Big Bear, The music played when Ting decides to step in, and the perfect foot to the face to disgrace his American pig ass. Gets to me everytime I see it.

My favorite part was the Big Bear fight also lol.
Out of all his moves, the one I liked the best was when he fought in the club against that guy with the fro. That one part when he blocked his kicks, and kinda crouched down on the last block, then jumped up and elbowed his head.

My favorite fight scene is the fight scene against the bodyguard at the end of the movie.
The move that I liked the most was the fight against the guys at the entrance of the cave;he kicks them all so quickly that you can't really see the moves;it reminds me of Bruce Lee's kicks, some of them were so fast that I had to replay them slowly to watch them.
I also liked the chase in the streets, when he kind of jumps between 2 glasses.
More generally, all his kicks/moves were amazing.I had never seen some jumps/moves before.Ong Bak is certainly among the 3 best martial arts movies of all times,in my opinion though.

My favorite scene had nothing to do with fighting.

Everytime I see it, I am still amazed...I love the scene where he jumps in between the pieces of glass. That whole market scene was actually the first scene of Ong Bak I saw.

Can I say I love all the scenes ?
Ok my favorites scenes are the market scene, the illegal boxing and the cave scene hehe

. My favorite blow is Bata Loop Pak (Thawan Daeng, thanks for explaining the meaning of this blow).
Actually, the only scene I don't like is the scene where Muay Lek and George are playing cards. I felt almost asleep hehe

.
What's amazing is each time I watch Ong-Bak I discover new things and I can't have enough of the fights scenes even if I know them by heart :)

lets see...fave part of flick? the art of muay thai exposed for real! i especially enjoyed his elbow/knee combinations. they rocked!!!! towards the end, tony gave new meaning to technique as well as showing it. over all, i appreciated the dedication, honor & devotion he practitioned through out the movie regarding muay thai. unlike most movies now days in which have no bearing meaning at all when it comes to fighting, other then drugs, gangs, violence etc. the message sent from tony is, don't flaunt your style for show. honor it to its fullest!
Sawatdee
Mar 1 2005, 11:32 AM
Forgot to say I don't think the movie was violent like I heard sometimes. There are no blood (just a little in the cave scene), no free violences and a hero who fight only because he has no choices. The fights are beautiful to see and I discovered some parts of the thai culture so no regret for having buy a cinema ticket :)

Hi there, been some time since I been on this fourm.
Like the topic
My fave scene would have to be the on foot chase scene at the beginning and to be more specific the most coolest thing I seen in that movie would have to be where Tony has to the front split while sliding underneath a moving vehicle. I cant get over it. Every time i see that part im like

and watch it again and ill be like

and still im like

.
yeah Thats how I felt about that scene. Man this movie is

Mar 6 2005, 05:56 AM
My favourite parts in the movie:
1. when he was in the cave and did a lower spin kick then
immediately another revolution on the same leg into a
roundhouse kick
2. when the old woman selling knives was walking through
the market with her two baskets of knives, just in time
for the bad guys to purchase them
3. when he first went to the fight club, and took out that
first guy he ever fought with a single knee kick to the
abdomen, so that he could get the village money back
4. when the old big boss who had a hole in his larynx was
laughing in a evil way with his artificial voice box
(i laughed, it sounded really funny)
5. when he slid under the van doing the splits (how did his
shoes slide so well?!?!). and then right afterwards the
bad guys try to go under in a clumsy way.
6. every time he did a jump or a leap gracefully to get away
from the gangsters, and right afterwards it shows how
clumsy the gangsters are in getting around/through the
same obstacle
ok that's enough for now. it's definitely my favourite martial arts film i've seen to date.

after one spin you be like hes done but BAM he just keeps going and kicks out just at the end its unblieveable!! and near the end when he is fighting he does a spin kick to the guys leg the guy raises his leg to dodge it but tony spins a full 360 and kicks him down to the ground just beautiful stuff. Tony Jaa is the best!

Every scene in the movie was fantastic, but my two favorites are the very beginning when he is doing his form (?) talking to his uncle. He gave grace a whole new meaning for me. And when he drops that guy in the first fight scene with one shot. In the theatre I was in, we were all expecting a "regular" fight sequence, and the shock and perfection of him taking that guy out like that got about a three second silent pause from the whole audience, and then, in unison, everyone said a quiet "daaaammnnn" which when all those people said it at the same time, it wasnt so quiet as they thought it would be. Then I could not stop laughing, but it was from happiness.

And I was the only female in the whole theater. The next day, I took my daughter to see it, and she loved it as much as I did. I wanted to go to see it again today, but the theatres are not showing it anymore. I am upset as I was not finished seeing it enough and I dont see where it is released on DVD for non-PAL players.
If anyone knows where I can buy this movie for American region code dvd systems, please post a link.
Also, does anyone know where I can get the music or soundtrack from the movie?
Thanks
Danny
Mar 18 2005, 07:59 PM
you can order the vcd from
http://www.ethaicd.com/show.php?pid=9642 waterfalls. The vcd has no regional codes but it will work on your dvd player regardless. When you get the vcd,the movie is gonna be the original thai version and has no subtitles. But still its worth ordering. However, the ongbak dvd's regional encryption code is only set to play in the southeast asia region. The only way to play the dvd is to have a computer that is configured to play in the specific region corresponding to ongbaks dvd region. But remember the number of times u can switch regions is limited. I switched regions many times watching regular dvds and ongbak dvd that my computer wouldn't allow me to change regional settings anymore.

I'm not going to write which scenes in Ong-Bak are fantastic, because I agree with all of you. I only want to say that the director's idea of repeating some takes (especially during the chase and the final fight in the cave)is excellent. Each time I watch Ong-Bak I can savor Tony's incredible skills and thanks to these repetitions it is double pleasure.

Heh. This might sound a little goofy, but here goes...
Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE the action scenes. All are awesome and I really can't say I have a favorite because they are all so great and powerful.
What scenes really stick out in my mind as being 'favorites' are the ones of Ting and his innocence or pure nature. For example, in the begining when he's going about his Kata at night and is interrupted by the monk there's this close up on him, his hands pressed together and he acknowledges his understanding as to what his Master has just said. Though I wish I could repeat it, I can't. He just look so honest. I don't know a better word to discribe it.
I also love the scene of Ting in the city, where he's by himself and praying at a buddhist shrine. It's really lovely. Along with that would be when he first defeats one of his major opponents in the club. He shows his respect for his opponent with hands clasped together once more. It's great. ^.^ I loved all of it really^.^

hi HDD, you mentioned the scene where ting kneels and wai to his defeated opponent big bear. you know, when i saw that the first time, i understood why he would do that, but i felt that it shouldn't have been to big bear. big bear was really disrespectful, he beat up an innocent guy (almost killed him), and he hit a girl. i felt like ting shouldn't have showed that respect to him (obviously, ting is a much better person than i am!). i thought the director should have put that after a different fight, maybe after the fight with toshiro.
as a side note, of the three guys ting fought in the club that night, i liked the big bear character the best. i think the actor playing big bear did a great job, and when i saw the 'making of', i thought he must be a nice guy too; great sense of humor! anyway, i liked the big bear character so much because he was so good at being so bad!
HeavenlyDragonDancer
Apr 13 2005, 09:42 AM
I understand your point as to why you thought Ting shouldn't have showed his respect to that particular opponent, But...
I feel that it was very appropriate because it shows the audience what an honestly good person the character Ting is. It's not about whether Ting is 'better' than Big Bear or not. It's about choices we make in life. Big Bear chose to be an over'bearing'(yuk yuk) bully and throw his yang energy all over the place while kind Ting was able to keep his balance of yin and yang energies.
That's just how I saw it^.^
Namaste.

Ha I like this thread. I agree with much that's been said. There is one specific knee VS the 3rd guy in the fight club who is using furniture. When he initially backs up against the wall, Jaa does a flying knee into him. It seems like he came from miles away. There are lots of high impact knees in that fight scene, and extended kicks to the mid-section, which also have high impact, and send the opponent flying backwards.
I love the initial kick to Big Bear too, like others have said. He goes down hard, he sells that kick to the maximum, and Jaa did it so quickly.

Is that what you call it?
"Bata loop pak" in Filipino Tagalog means, "Boy falls hard"
My cousin told me several words from Thai language are the same we use in Filipino Tagalog (tagalog is the main dialec in the Philippines)

bata = foot
loop = stroke
pak = face
it's not an axe kick, it's a front push kick (teep kick) to the face. also, after connecting with the face, the foot is supposed to slide downwards (hence "stroke"). read some earlier posts in this thread to learn more about this move.

In Tagalog "Bata" = young Boy
but actually "Loop pak" together means a hard fall.
I just understood in the same move as an "Ax kick" TaeKwonDo english term.
I will research this move. I will read more on this Bata Loop pak,...Facinating!

axe kick, as i was taught, is: bring your foot high above and then bring it down heel-first, crashing down on your opponent's face or collarbone. i was taught that it is called axe kick because the foot crashing down is like an axe chopping wood. this differs from the thai teeb because the teeb pushes out, instead of crashing down.
it is not uncommon for different schools, lineages, or styles to have different names for same moves, or same names for different moves. maybe for your style, axe kick is different move?
