i finally got a chance to watch Dan Chupong's lastest movie - Kon Fai Bin คนไฟบิน (previously titled TabanFai).
right off the bat, if any one out there can understand thai but can't read (or reads very slowly like me) this movie might be a little tough to grasp. it's filmed entirely in the isaan dialect (or in the case of a certain character, a speech impediment) with thai subtitles. because i already knew the story and i could make out a fair amount of the dialogue, i was ok. however, i'm quite certain that i didn't get some of the finer points. sure i could have paused the movie to read the thai subtitles, but that would have entirely ruined the flow of the movie.
for info about the story, check out the info in this thread and the press release.
my opinions on the film: it's a blast (pun intended). it's great fun to watch, the stunts are cool, the f/x are cool, the fighting is cool. this movie is more about fantasy combat than realistic fighting (which i normally don't like much) but i really enjoy it in this movie because it really is so much FUN!! there's a lot of realistic fighting mixed in with the fantasy fighting, and as usual with dan's work there's a lot of stuntwork involved in the fighting.
i do have a few complaints: some of the camera work is too tight so we don't get to see the fighting clearly. there's not quite enough dialogue from dan; he has a really strong screen presence and he's a pretty good actor. in some of the stunts it's hard to see faces, so we're not sure if it's really dan or a stuntman.
one last thing to say: for me, the highlight of the movie is the fight scene between dan and his mentor, the living legend panna ritikrai !! it's not the best fight scene ever made or anything; it's just really cool to see dan vs panna !
i highly recommend this movie! even if you don't speak thai or isaan, it's a blast!
