Thank you Sawatdee, for posting the link to the learningthai website. I read it for hours the first night. I am now getting started on learning the thai language, with the Manee and Friends lessons. I like them a lot. But it made me wonder if there are any others out here who have tried to learn to read and speak thai, and what the hardest part of the process was for them. I know I have only now begun, but I can already see that the tonal aspect of the language will be something completely different for me. haha!! It feels like I am singing, and I am very emabrassed to sing in front of people. How silly is that?

Shane- thank you so much! Of course I have no idea what they are saying, but give me some time....I'll get there. Maybe not in this lifetime, but... I am studying the thai letters at present, and am surprised that I can pick them out. When I first began, I thought most of the letters looked so much the same I would never get it, not to mention that there are so many letters to begin with. I am excited to be learning thai. I can see where my eventual problem will be, though. I will be able to learn the letters and will be able to read thai, but I will not have a clue what the words mean. Building a knowledge base of vocabulary will be difficult. But not impossible.

Thanks for the music. It helps the learning process to keep the sounds of the language in my ears.

Yes, that is an excellent site. I am working thru the Manee and Friends lessons offered on the site and so far, I can only remember how to say "Manee has eyes" Manee mee dthaa. (?) I am intrigued by the written alphabet, also. It is such a beautiful script to look at.

yexika, i think if you are diligent with the lessons, it can be just as good as learning it like in a foreign language class. of course the best way is total immersion-- go to the country, hear the language, speak the language... but it's difficult for many people to do. learningthai.com is free!

the manee lessons have been taught in schools in thailand for many, many years! my friend who is visiting me from thailand said that she remembers the manee lessons from when she was a kid!

one caveat: beware the southern accent! the speakers on that website have a little bit of an accent. but don't worry; you won't be learning anything that central-thai speakers wouldn't understand. plus, being a non-native speaker of thai, it is likely that you'll speak thai with your own accent. i speak thai with a heavy american accent, and i've been speaking thai since before i was speaking english! anyway, learningthai.com is by far the best resource for learning how to read, write, speak, and understand thai on the net!

Find an intl video store and get lots of Thai videos. Watch Thai tv shows, dramas, movies, etc. Hearing the language often really sharpens your listening skills. This is one technique I am using in learning japanese. And it works prefectly. Also, subtitles would help. Things don't translate directly, but in time you will be able to distinguish frases, words, sentances and put meaning to them with or without the help of subtitles (and sometimes even improve what the subtitle left out). :)

Good luck, language is truely an invaluable skill. I plan on learning Thai in a few years (or maybe even sooner if something comes up, like I just have to scratch the itch or something).
