While my brain is still resting, the only thing I can do to keep this website updated is taking you to see some behind-the-scene stills from the most awaited action movie of the year ?Tom Yum Goong?. Sahamongkon Film, the studio who finances this movie, just gave Thai press a chance to visit the shooting location. And today we have some pics of the set to show. We may not have many details posted today, but keep your eyes on this website folks; more cool news about this movie is coming soon (on our special scoop, Tom Yum Goong?s diary).
The fourth movie by director Prachya Pinkaew (after ?Rong Ta Lap Pap?, ?Kerd Eek Tee Tong Me Tor?, and ?Ong-Bak?), Tom Yum Goong tells a story of ?Kam?, a young man from the country side, whose life becomes complicated after his beloved father-son elephants are stolen by a powerful mafia and his gang, and exported to Australia. Now the fight is about to begin!!
Director: ?We?re still trying to attach Thai culture into our film, so that foreigners can understand the way we act and think. In Ong-Bak, we tried to tell how much we respect the Buddha figures and that it is very bad for people to misuse them. For this movie, we will tell the story of elephants because many countries have interest in them, yet they don?t have them. Some say our country has a lot of elephants but we don?t take a good care of them. So we want to say something about this, and perhaps fix the misunderstanding. In addition, since this is an action movie, I have thought of many new Muey-Thai moves that I think nobody has seen them before. And I?m sure that the audience will go wild after seeing this movie.?
That was the director?s view on the story of Tom Yum Goong. Since this is an action movie, fight choreography therefore plays a vital role. The director also shared his view on this issue with us.
Director: ?We?re creating different styles of fighting for different characters. Johny?s character uses Wushu (typo?) which is the traditional Chinese martial art, Nathan?s character uses K1 which is becoming increasingly famous in many countries, and Ja?s character uses ?Muey Kod-cha-san? (directly translated to elephant boxing). It should be interesting to see different styles of martial arts clashing each other.?
Apart from Ja Panom (or his international name ?Tony Ja?), Mum Jokmok (Ja?s partner in Ong-Bak), and Bongkod Kongmalai who play the main characters, two of the main villains in the film, Johny Nyeun (typo?) and Nathan Jones, also showed up at the press conference. Johny Nyeun is the baddie who fought Jet Li and got bitten by the Rotweiler in ?Cradle to the grave?. He is also the stunt double for Spider-man movies. Nathan Jones is the professional Wrestler. He was recently seen in ?Troy? (yes it?s the giant dude who got stabbed on the shoulder by Brad Pitt). Only Jin Sing who plays the triad boss in the film didn?t show up.
And the scene we were lucky enough to see is the face off between Johny (Johny Nyeun?s character), a triad member who runs the restaurant (??) ?Tom Yum Goong?, and Kam (Ja?s character) who?s looking for his lost elephants and has found evidence to believe that Johny is one of the thugs who stole his animals. Johny was threatening Pla (Bongkod?s character), a girl who is forced into prostitution, when Kam met him. The inevitable fight happens afterward, at the Darling Harbor Bridge, Sydney.
?Where are my elephants? Give them back to me?. This is the recap of the dialogue, and then the only thing we heard is Pa Pa (people fighting sound)!!!
Although shooting in Australia won?t have as many people blocking the scene as shooting in Thailand, and also a good preparation was put before the shooting, the crews can?t escape all obstructions. The shooting is very difficult and is constrained by time. Most Thai crews complain about the strict working conditions in this country.
?90% of the movie will be shot in Australia. The problem is that we have no experience of working with the foreign crews. The Labour Union here has many rules we are not used to, but have to follow. We feel that these rules are very strict. But on the bright side, we can take this experience to improve the standard of our working condition in the future.?
Before the shooting began, a long rehearsal was done to make sure that everything would be perfect for the camera. Punna Rittikrai, the fight choreographer from Ong-Bak, returned to do the same job for this movie. No wire assist, no cgi, no stunt double are still the concepts used to film the fight. The filming took place after the long rehearsal. Everything went fine. The director mentioned that ?what we saw today is not the best that the movie has yet to offer?.
However, the chubby director didn?t tell us what the best fight in the movie was like. But from what we heard, the highlight would be the 4-minuit non-stop fight scene that Ja has to perform without a cut. Oh man, I can?t wait!!
Ja: ?This movie shows a unique form of Muey-Thai called ?Muey Kod-cha-san?. I believe that not many people have seen this type of fighting style before. This is a traditional Muey Thai that was used in the old days. Muey Kod-cha-san focuses on throwing, catching, and breaking by imitating what the elephant does. An example is the move that imitates how the elephant use its trunk to break the wood. We call this move ?Shang Tum Lai Long? (directly translated to elephant destroys a coffin). Other moves include ?Arawun Soey Nga? (directly translated to elephant attacks using its tusks) and ?Hug Nguoung Aiyara? (directly translated to breaking the elephant?s trunk). I?m sure this movie will offer the audience something they?ve never seen on screen before.?
That was Ja?s view on his fighting style for this movie.
This movie is budgeted at 200 million Baht (approx. $5 US). If the shooting does not delay, we expect this movie to come out by the next Chinese new year.
