Melanie, is it really that expensive to go to thailand from oz? i didn't think it was because i notice a lot of aussie tourists in thailand. anyway, i hope you are able to go to thailand and ride an elephant! once when i was flying back to NY from thailand, i fellow passenger remarked how she makes a point of going to Chiang Mai to ride an elephant every time she goes to thailand, and will schedule business around her opportunity to ride an elephant! i haven't been on the back of an elephant since i was a kid, and i think it's long past due time i should do it again. elephants are so cool!
Hi Thawan Daeng
You can get flights to Phuket, incl 8 nights accommodation for AUD$1,188 per person. That, at the moment, is still a lot of money for us to save up. I know that it is cheaper than a lot of other places to go for us, but we still can't afford it right now.

Our friends went to Thailand for their honeymoon and the exchange rate was excellent and they could buy a lot of things, so once you were over there, it would be pretty good for us. But, you still have to save initially, and it's quite hard to do that with a mortgage at the moment. Especially when they have just put up the interest rates again, and they may do it again soon!!
The only other place I have been to outside Australia is Hawaii for my honeymoon. I was lucky enough to have my mum and dad pay for my airfare over, as a 21st present (instead of having a big party and loads of presents) and plus they are with a time share, so we got a great deal through that company to stay at certain places and it didn't cost us heaps of money. We only had to save for hubby's airfare and spending money. That was heaps though, because we almost had to pay 50 cents in our dollar!!!
We are mainly doing a lot of 4WD trips before we start a family and seeing our own country before exploring other countries. It is great to see heaps of sites that not many other Australians have seen.

We get to experience all the
deadly Australian wildlife in the outback too!!! But I won't scare you too much about that.

I would still love to travel though, but 4WD trips and camping everywhere is a more realistic holiday for us at the moment...
