Welcome on that new board 04_wink.gif

I wanted to share with you a wonderful website I found few weeks ago.

The site was created by a Thai teenager who shows all about is country home through his every-day life.

There are over 800 pictures of every moment of his life from the time when he was a baby until now with the birth of his own baby. There are lots of pictures about his culture, custom, traditions etc. such as weddings, funerals, becoming a novice monk and a lot more. In fact, if you want to know anything about the culture of Thailand you will find it here.

Really interesting for all of us who are interested in Thai culture !! You can learn a lot of Thai words for example

Vanessa, you might get a misperception about this but Thailand'd never been a colony of any countries and we're proud of that

but then again, that's why most Thai people can't use other languages fluently (other than Thai! )

Like a lot of people, when I watched Ong-Bak and discovered who Tony Jaa was, I wanted to learn more about thai culture. I discovered a beautiful country and a beautiful culture. Some friends of mine came on Thailand few months ago and they didn't wanted to return in France :) Hope I will have the chance to visit this country (with Mongolia) one day.

I think what I ment to say, was it apart of the French Colony? I only thought this because of that music video I watched, where half the song was actually in French.
Sawatdee
Are you talking about the music video clip of Ong Bak ? It's in french because the song was made by a french group for the movie's released in France.

Just a little history fact....Thailand was never under control by any European country because the King of the country was smart and figuring out that his army didn't stand a chance against the invading European countries he made treaties with them and therefore in exchange the European countries never invaded Thailand and also brought goods to Thailand and has helped the country become very modernized.
Okies
Let me give you a little history lesson here Vanessa 02_biggrin.gif

Thailand is the ONLY and I repeat ONLY country in South East Asia that was NEVER under European colonial rule.

There are in reality two reasons for this.

1. The Thai King opened up for foreigners, both for trade and cultural exchange, Portugese traders went and came frequently, and England and Frence has embasies there. Thais were introduced to science and new thinking and tools wich was unknown for Asians at that time.

Since the official "reasons" for Europeans to collonise a foreign nation was to make them "civilise" since they were only "barbarians"

The Thai King choose himself to "civililise" his nation on his own.

2. England and France like usual had a VERY turbulent relationship.

England controled west Asia, all the way from India and to Myangmar (Burma) While France was Vietnam and all the way to Cambodia and down to Indonesia if I'm not horribly miscorrect.

France was the world power that wanted Siam /Thailand) the most, no question about that. But if France controled Siam them they would be a border neighbours. At a time of war that isn't desired. Plus the King of Siam had made a good relation with England, meaning if France invaded Siam, they would declare war with England.

England on the other hand wanted to "use" Siam as a buffer state. Meaning that Siam were to remain independent as a Nation and becoming a fine huge border that seperated Englanf and France in Asia.

On the other hand the ONLY think you would have been correct about is that France DID take Khemer (Cambodia) away from Siam. But never Siam itself.

Hope this was a little helpfull.

So Ong-Kot what are my history grades? lol rofl.gif

161_sign26_g.gif Yes, You are right! But never forget that England at that time also took away the southern territories away from the Thai and those regions now a day are the 4 northern states of Malaysia in which border with Thailand.

For France was also took Laos from Thai as well and now you could see that's why France dominated the whole Indochina (Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam) to complete with England.

22_weep.gif History is sad!
