I just came back from seeing TYG.
First, I have to say I'm disappointed on the movie's quality. It really shows that the director had reached his own limit in Ong-Bak. There're many useless points in TYG (that lead to nothing), how story goes, the light, the lines (conversation).
Basically, it's just a Thai movie with more budget. The movie didn't go to another level. There're lame jokes (which mostly just rude language, thanks to Mam again). The story behind the bad guys doesn't fit in. The news report scene is poor, can't they find a native speaker who speaks better English? And the most important thing is light. Ong-Bak has a problem with the light, the movie is too dark, same with TYG. How do you show Tony Jaa when we don't see his face clearly. Some scenes we see a guy fliiping around kicking things who looks somehow like Tony Jaa. The last fight scene has poor image quality just like in Ong-Bak. It's like you convert 500K.jpg to 12K.gif.
Anyway, the action scenes are great. There're some long shots that make you feel like you're watching video games, a hero walks and beats bad guys around non-stop, it's just like that. However, there're some moves that they borrow from Ong-Bak, so I start to worry that they may run out of idea soon.
After watching it, I think it's time to find a new director/producer for Tony Jaa. He shouldn't waste his time designing an action scene for a movie like this anymore. Remember, he's 30 right now. Movie production in Thailand is poor, I hope he works with Hong Kong/Korea/Japan producer/director/crew while he still designs action scenes of his own. At least they know how to control the light in movies...
If you saw it, please post your opinion.
Terribly perfect

Nah. It's not bad. It was what I've expected.

I also believe it's not that bad you guy mentioned.
I haven’t seen the movie yet. I don't know whether the ticket is still available tomorrow. For the poor image quality, I read some threads in Thai posted forum that it was intentionally made. It's something like special shooting technique of the movie which is recently popular among the ads. I'll share my opinion after watching TYG.
Someone said LEAVE your expectation in front of the door prior to entering the theater.
ENJOY TYG!

LOL I didn't say it's bad. I just pointed out the weak points. (maybe because I didn't praise the actions much?

) And I didn't expect that high too, still I'm disappointed (about the film production).
They said they want to go to another level but they didn't. It's like they film an ordinary Thai film in a different location. The plot is equal a Thai drama. Mam, Tak, the polices don't play important role as they should. TYG (story) tried to be like Rush Hour2, but they couldn't make it.

And I also heard that Pratchaya intended to use the rough image, but still it doesn't fit. Using it on a finishing move is ok, but that's just too much.
Note that all of this's an opinion, not a fact. If you want anybody to respect your opinion, learn to pay respect to other's opinion first, and discuss in a good manner.

i have to admit i felt cheated when i went to see ong bak at the cinema in the uk
i thought the production was far from international quality.
the film was billed as the new bruce lee yet the production was not even equal to those old run shaw films like one arm swordman.
i think they did this to make tony jaa stand out even more .it's the year 2005 nobody is going to fall for such simple games

The point is Bruce Lee got good production, Jaa didn't. But the actions in TYG are great as I said. There're long shots that are well-crafted. There're scene that you saw in other movies but without wire for TYG. (Like flying above motorcycle in Blade 2, for an example)

I just got back home from watching TYG for the second time when I get to get good seats instead of the lousy front row seats the first time seeing it during the premiere. Honestly the only thing that I was disappointed about TYG was that I felt that they've cut out alot of action segments in the movie. For example, the part that I remembered not seeing in the actual movie is when TJ was flying through the air and then did a flying elbow drop right onto Johnny after jumping over the other two guys heads. Also, remember the intro of the official tyg site when TJ was doing his thing against the thugs in front of this huge door? That part was nowhere to be seen in the movie. I'm a bit annoyed by the fact that they didn't show the full version. Otherwise the action aspect is top notched, and everything else was well done. Makes me wish I can buy a cd of the movie right away. haha.

Question: For those who've seen it, did they do the repetition scenes in slow-motion like Ong-Bak? 'Cause that was awesome!! Anyway, I didnt see it yet (US). I want to see it!! Blah!! Also, most action movie doesn't need story. It's all about the ACTION, baby!! Enjoy ~

They didn't repeat it, only slow motion.
And you can bet that the actions are great. Some fight scenes can be considered a classic! I really want to tell the shots that I like but I don't want to spoil it. :( All I can say is the things on the trailer is just 30-40%.

To Cactrot Rapido,
Are you a director? Are you a native speaker? It's seem you're proud of your perfect English and your knowledge about the technique. If you're Thai, I would say that I feel a shame of you. But if you're foreigner,It's all right. I just saw the movie and I acept that I feel annoyed about the cutting out. The movie was so rushed. However, all aspects was so good. TOM YUM GOONG is wonderful. I think the director and all actors are sacrified to this movie and they tried hard. I think other people (not include you) just enjoy seeing the movie. I think they don't serious about the light, the lines(conversation) and how the story goes. Imagined when normal people came back from seeing the movie and they was talking "oh! enjoyed the movie," not "oh!the light is too dark." Finally, I am so sorry about my poor English because I am not a native speaker. You may feel annoyed it.

You're missing the point, my friend. This is opinion.
There're many reviews on the internet that say something bad (or terrible) about Ong-Bak which were written by people in film industry, movie reviewer or just a person. I feel bad about some, I feel good about some. That's it. We read, we talk about it. Nothing personal. It's not like "WOAH this guy talks bad on something Thai, they hate Thai"
I know that some Thai people take criticise as serious matter, we can't say bad things about Thai films. I feel sorry if it bothers you. But however, I said there're both pros and cons. Don't look just pros or just cons.
I saw Ong-Bak in theatre, I bought legal Ong-Bak CD. I saw TYG, and I'll buy legal TYG CD. If that helps.

Yes, me too. I don't care that much about the light, continuation (is this a word?) of script, role management, blah blah blah... All I want to see is Tony Jaa & his killer moves, John Foo, Johny Nguen, Lateef, and Mummy Lao+
Lots of Hollywood action movies spent zillion times more money than Ong-Bak, yet they still came up with the same level of lame story line and bad acting. For TYG, I think there is no need to climb the ladder to watch this movie, so don't expect that you will see the oscar nomination script from it.
All 007 movies are similar. All lethal weapon movies are similar. All Die hard movies are still similar (building, airport, come-on!). So, why can't Ong-Bak and TYG share similarity in theme.
I know one thing. Those movies gave us entertainment, and that's what the action movies are for!!!

Aug 11 2005, 09:07 PM
I like action movies with a reason behind the action. Ong Bak at least had that. Whyd Tony Jaa fight in the illegal fight club? To get his money back. Whyd he fight Big Bear? Because he doesn't like men beating women. Why was there a tuk tuk chase, etc etc. Everything had a reason behind it. Sure the story was simple but everything flowed. You understood why he did what he did. Things dont just happen out of thin air.
In TYG the story was pretty much the same only this time it was an elephant missing. I was pretty confused as to what was going on. Forget the bad english. It was just edited weird. Tony Jaa seemed to just beat up people for no reason. I'm not gonna spoil anything but things just happen out of nowhere. People appear and disappear. Roles that seem important at first end up being unimportant.
Now don't get me wrong the action is still top notch. But I dont agree that we go see an action movie just for action. We all want the action to make sense. We want it to be part of the story telling. It just makes the movie that much better. Without a cohesive story you might as well just watch muay thai fights on tv, tricking samplers from bilang.com, or any indie action movie thats out there online. Would you wanna see TYG without the story and just the action edited together for a 30 minute action movie? Some of us would but Im sure a lot of others wouldnt. Its not just action that makes the movie good.

Agreed, especially this part.

I have recently watch TYG. Again, like stated earlier there seem to be both cons and pros. As for me, I do agree that the english is very poor. If you're a native english speaker, there are chances you won't understand what "Mum" is trying to say. And I totally agree with the news reporter with poor english. I mean the news reporters are suppose to be from "Australian news channel". And just like Ong Bak, Tony Jaa hardly talks at all. Which I don't mind much, but I would like to see him talk abit more than just going around beating people don't you think? And if you're not a native thai, you might not get some of the jokes. Or the "cast" that appear for a few seconds. I do agree that most of the jokes are lame. However, it does lighten up the movie. So regardless whether the joke is lame or not, as long it can make me smile abit i'm happy with it.
Lastly, the most annoying point in the movie for me (and it's just my opinion) is Mum. I do find him very funny, but in the movie he keeps switching from thai then to english. At least it's very hard to catch up with him (even tho i'm thai.. but thai isn't my first language). I rather have him stick to one language.
And about actions.. Its top in my chart of action movie. And yes you get this "vdo game" feeling when u watch him beating up all the bad guys. And since in TYG, the fighting scene is much faster, you can feel how painful the enemy is feeling. So if you're an action film lover, this is a movie you can't miss.
As to regarding the lights and etc of the movie. I find it decent. I don't see much problem with the lighting. The reason it was stated earlier that it's hard to see Tony Jaa's face, prolly is due to the fast action. I mean, seriously, that dude hardly stay still. And i find many scenes to be beautiful.
All in all, TYG is similar to "NEW POLICE STORY" but with much more brutal action. In term of story line, it is no betta than Ong Bak. I do believe TYG will be much more successful than Ong Bak due to Tony Jaa's popularity. Yet, the director needs to find a new approach to represent Tony Jaa.
THIS IS MY FIRST POST AND IS ALL MY OPINION!! SO DUN FLAME ME ON WHAT I THINK LOL. Btw.. i'm glad to be here.. hehe

Hahaha YES! Not just beating up the bad guys, he destroys everything in that scene! I'm like "There he goes...", "There he goes again", "...Will he ever stop?" LOL Tony Jaa is the real disaster.

ok i got one question :
does this movie kill Ong Bak action wise?
this is the only thing i need to know.
There're more actions than Ong Bak, longer fight, more opponents, faster speed, more realistic, better angle.
well, that explains it. i have to see this movie.

i agree with this. even tho i really like action and don't care about the story, there needs to be one to relate everything to.

The movie is being released in Hong Kong at the same time, I visited a few HK movie forums and the fans seemed to be pretty excited about this movie! TYG might score big in Hong Kong again this time!
